Village Hall

As Christmas approaches

The Christmas tree was delivered on Tuesday and dressed with the lights ready for the festive season. Slightly smaller than last year's tree... but significantly more manageable for those involved in putting it up... I believe it is a better shape and actually looks nicer. Hopefully the wanton vandalism that was encountered in previous years won't reoccur in 2013!

I have noticed the external decoration of the hall has now been completed. Rotten wood has been replaced in the barge boards and window sills, a new coat of wood stain applied and the doors and windows freshened up with a cream paint, which is more suited to a rural village hall in my opinion.

Venturing inside, one finds new 'conference-style' chairs that have been purchased. This style of chair is the preferred choice for most hotels and training delivery suites. Well suited for all-day events, providing good support and easy to set up, these new chairs will be a great improvement over the old uncomfortable fold-up chairs that have seen better days.

I am aware of the significant work that still needs to be undertaken inside the hall to stabilise the concrete floor. This will soon be attended to I believe, after which perhaps attention can be given to internal redecoration.

To improve the frontage of the Village Hall from the road, I would like to see the removal of the Village Hall sign and the tired lenticular. I think these have been placed much too close to each other and somewhat block the view of the hall, especially since the 'skirts' of the trees have been lifted. The Village Hall sign is much too large for purpose and the faded lenticular badly needs renovating to be placed elsewhere in the village.

I think a new Village Hall noticeboard needs to be commissioned too. One needs to be located adjacent to the fence-line, more accessible to people walking along the pavement, no longer requiring a diversion up the path to view current events.

Perhaps a new noticeboard could be similar in design to the one purchased by Nocton Parish Council for The Green?

This would identify the noticeboard as relating to 'Nocton Village Hall' within the carved lettering, which could actually double as a new sign, keeping the frontage free of clutter. I feel this would complement the other village noticeboard and be more in keeping with the heritage look, especially as it is in the heart of a conservation area.

It is good to see developments taking place with the drive and determination of our Parish Council.
