Nocton and District WI

April 2015 Update

April has been a busy month for the Nocton and District WI. Their regular meeting was an open meeting which included a talk and demonstration on Needle felting.

Members were taken through the stages of producing a flower and after watching the demonstration carefully, they were let loose with hanks of soft wool, barbed needles and a block of foam. With the foam blocks protecting the tables and much jabbing of wool with needles, (and a few pricked fingers as well), members produced attractive and colourful felt flowers, with the odd duckling and bear thrown in for good measure. An enjoyable and very sociable evening was had by all. The evening also saw four new members joining our WI, one of whom, Elaine,  won the raffle prize of a selection of fresh coffee, a cafétiere and some delicious chocolates. The competition, in line with the evenings talk was “A Piece of Embroidery” with Little Sue coming first, Doreen second and Julie third.

The following evening a number of WI members had a wonderful evening at LPAC watching an amateur but very polished production of Guys and Dolls.

A team of four members attended the annual Metheringham WI quiz the following week. Always a great afternoon, not least of all because of the delicious afternoon tea served, the team came a very respectable fifth out of 22 teams and a more judicious use of their joker may have brought a very different result.

The month’s activities were topped off with a visit to Ulceby Grange farm where the delicious Lincolnshire Poacher cheese is made. Twelve of us spent a fascinating morning learning about the history of the farm, the cheese, watching its production and standing within the amazing store of the maturing cheeses. The opportunity to purchase a selection of the cheeses and their delicious butter was taken advantage of.

Mays meeting will include a demonstration and chance for a hands on attempt at Paper Crafting with Zoe Tant whilst June is very different with one of the WI members, who is a guide at the newly refurbished Lincoln castle, giving a talk entitled “Lincoln Castle – Friend or Foe”.

If you would like to come along and meet us and see if the WI is for you the meetings are the second Monday of the month at 7.15 in Nocton Village Hall. You can try us out for a couple of months or ring Jane Kania on 01526323633 for more details.
