Nocton Cricket Club - match report

Nettleham v Nocton - 1st May 2016

Cup match - Nocton won by 74 runs

Batting first Nocton made steady progress against a very young Nettleham side. 7 of their players were only 13 or 14 years old so they clearly have a really good coaching programme for youngsters.

Paul Carrott top scored for Nocton with 52 with Mikey Atkinson, Rob Garfoot and David Franklin all making double figures. Nocton were all out for 185 in 32 overs. All the Nettleham bowlers made a contribution and took at least one wicket each. In reply Nettleham always struggled against the experienced Nocton attack with Mikey Atkinson and Rob Appleyard each taking 3 wickets.

Jordan McCardell and Lewis Jones put up some resistance making 48 runs between them. The last wicket pair of Jones and Dan Hopkirk put on a stubborn 36  but in the end they were all out for 109. Two games, two wins – a great start for the village team!

Ancaster v Nocton - 8th May 2016

League match - Ancaster won by 4 wickets

On a beautiful, warm day at Ancaster we had a strange game of ups and downs in which the result could have gone either way!

The Nocton innings started brilliantly then fell apart; Ancaster started well and ran into trouble before they finished winners with 4 wickets to spare, somewhat relieved! Nocton won the toss and chose to bat – a decision which looked pretty smart as Dylan Garfoot and Mikey Atkinson raced to a 60 run opening partnership in no time. Dylan reached, and cleared, the boundary several times in his 68.

Unfortunately, where the openers found the going easy no-one else got into their stride at all. Paul Carrott played cautiously for 6 before falling to a brilliant, one-handed diving catch. With him gone all resistance fell and we were all out for a disappointing 96.

Ancaster started much more steadily and went to 61 before Rob Appleyard bowled a very stubborn Nick Bottomley – a tall batter who is often not out at the end of an innings! Rob bowled a very good line and length with very few stray balls to score from. Mikey Atkinson couldn’t find a way through this week and neither could our ultra-reliable Miles Lynch but when Dylan came back into the attack, bowling pretty quickly, he and Rob Appleyard (4-23 off 10 overs) picked up 5 more wickets but couldn’t stop Ancaster reaching their target.

If we’d made another 50 it could have been a very different story!

Plate 1 - Rob Garfoot falls LBW

Plate 2 - Ancaster on the attack

Plate 3 - Ancaster attacking again

Plate 4 - Frustration shows! A near miss for Rob Appleyard
