Don’t feed the rats

Be careful not to over feed ducks

Feeding the ducks is a popular activity, but rats are being attracted to the area by an easy and regular source of food.

Rats are one of the most serious pests and can carry diseases which cause Leptospirosis, Salmonella and Campylobacter. They can also cause structural damage to buildings by gnawing and burrowing.

Residents are being urged to consider the following advice when feeding the ducks:
  • Please stop feeding the ducks if they appear uninterested or are leaving the food uneaten, and avoid feeding the ducks if other residents are already offering them food. Any leftover food on the ground will be what the rats will feed on..
  • Offer only foods in bite-sized pieces that the ducks can easily consume without choking or swallowing.
  • Litter can harm the ducks as well as attract rats so ensure you dispose of all waste properly including bags and any leftover food.
