Boxing Day Blues

The age of 60

With this significant birthday upon me before the end of 2014, I thought I would share a few things about achieving this particular milestone:

1.  You have gained an appreciation of all types of personality, but you don't need to suffer fools gladly
2.  You can laugh off idiots instead of getting angry about them
3.  You have learned to rid yourself of the people who suck life out of you
4.  You can now appreciate who your real friends are

5.  You discover what really matters and have stopped striving for needless goals
6.  You know that work might be important, but it is never as important as family
7.  You accept that certain things are out of your control and it's how you deal with them that matters
8.  You acknowledge that certain things have to be let go as time passes

9.  You have weathered marital storms and your relationship is stronger because of it
10. You know that sex really CAN be better as you grow older... and that just having sex is a bonus
11. You are okay spending time alone, in fact you prefer it sometimes
12. You know that having great wealth is not that important
13. You learn that less is actually more

14. You know how to take care of yourself and be independent
15. You know that good health trumps everything
16. You celebrate the things that are still working with your body, rather than distressing over the many aches and pains that niggle day-to-day
17. You discover that NHS bureaucracy will conspire to kill you and that NHS staff will conspire to save you

18. You appreciate how important it is to have a good laugh and don't feel ashamed of having a good cry too at times
19. You don't mind going grey... as it can look spectacular
20. You know that being comfortable usurps style every time
21. You don't mind taking a nap outside of normal bedtime

22. You know you have lived through some amazing world events that others have not experienced
23. You realise too many people you idolised in your youth are falling off the ladder of life
24. You discover you are the oldest surviving one of your family generation
25. You are aware that time passes much quicker when you are older and that it is important to maximise each day

26. You get to see your own kids grow into interesting people
27. You feel blessed with having grandchildren... you experience that feeling of unconditional love for someone else all over again and that is a beautiful miracle
28. You know that being a good listener is more valuable than being a good talker and that it requires continual practice

29. You realise memory becomes a fickle friend, but you know the facts are in there... somewhere
30. You accept that life is still good
