Superfast broadband - latest news

Location of new fibre cabinet

I refer to my last blog on this matter and can now give some further information.

Steve Brookes of Onlincolnshire has kindly contacted me this morning to give some more detail of the work involved to install a new fibre cabinet on Main Street.

There is insufficient space to position a new fibre cabinet alongside the old Cabinet 3/2 adjacent to the Post Office. Therefore, the new fibre cabinet will be located on the opposite side of the road to the existing street-level Cabinet 3/2. This will require road works to excavate a trench across Main Street.

The trenching work is still scheduled to commence 4th April (the earliest date that Lincolnshire Highways would allow BT's contractors to start) and will take about two days to complete. This trenching work will enable both the old and new cabinets to be connected.

It is then estimated it will take a further 3 to 4 weeks to fully commission the new fibre cabinet and for availability for orders. However, once the road crossing has been completed Steve will be able to get a more accurate forecast for us.

I will report further updates as I receive them.

UK hits broadband target… maybe

'Good news on broadband - the UK has hit the target of making a superfast connection available to 90% of homes, as promised back in 2010. But the bad news is that the world has moved on since then, and this achievement won't have anyone cracking open the champagne.'

Updates

1st April
"Metheringham 3/2 (Nocton) - Minor delay to delivery expected, meeting with sub-contractor held at site; new cabinet location agreed, fast-track documents with highways department. Traffic management beginning w/c 4th April." [OnLincolnshire]

6th April
No traffic management, no BT contractors on-site and no road works

8th April
"Metheringham 3/2 (Nocton) - Minor delay to delivery expected, meeting with sub-contractor held at site; new cabinet location agreed, fast-track documents with highways department. Traffic management beginning moved - agreed start 13th April." [OnLincolnshire]

It seems likely the new fibre cabinet is going to be located just to the rear of the 'Bardney' sign/Parish Council sign situated on the corner of Main Street/The Green. Contractors appear to have indicated the chosen location by spraying a rectangle in the foliage adjacent to Hall's Yard House.

  1. Thanks as ever Geoff. Amazing for them only to work out at this eleventh hour that there was insufficient space!

  2. Yes I agree. You would think that all cabinet locations should have been surveyed prior to the fibre programme, but clearly not. Let's hope that things go smoothly from now to going 'live'.

  4. I'm appreciative that your blogsite is the only place where I can get reliable information concerning broadband. More delays don't help our circumstance but it is good to know we're nearly there. You may not believe this but I used to live in rural France and our speeds were better than those that are offered here. One up for France methinks!

  5. Well tomorrow is the 13th, but not a Friday... so fingers crossed the work is going to commence Vernon.
