Nocton Cricket Club - match report

Nocton CC v Rustons - 15 May 2016

Cup Match - Nocton WON by 97 runs

On a glorious, sunny Sunday afternoon Nocton took on Rustons in their second match in the Major Hoult Cup. The players had produced one of the best wickets ever seen at the club and chose to bat first. Captain Dylan Garfoot set off attacking the Rustons bowlers in his usual style hitting one huge 6 into the middle of the adjacent field before settling into a quieter spell of batting before falling just 4 short of his half century. The loss of Dylan often used to lead to a batting collapse but this week David Franklin supported with 18, Kyle Thompson hit a powerful and stylish 25 before all-rounder Miles Lynch hit an excellent 48 leaving Nocton all out for 184. Simon Dean of Rustons was the only bowler able to contain Nocton’s batters taking 6 – 25 off 9 overs.

Nocton made early inroads into the Rustons batting line up leaving them 8-2 but then Stuart Silk and Arun Koottungal took the score to 73 in impressive style. Neither Dylan nor Rob Appleyard, last week’s bowling heroes, could break through and their 15 overs cost 73 runs – very unusual for them. Nocton were perhaps fortunate that Stuart Silk had another appointment and needed to leave the game undefeated and looking very dangerous on 28. That signalled the beginning of the end for Rustons. Koottungal was run out by Isaac Appleyard with a direct hit at the stumps and another batter was run out by Dylan with a hard, flat throw from the boundary. A double bowling change brought on Mikey Atkinson and Miles Lynch who each took 2 wickets for three runs. Mikey chose his quicker bowling instead of spin, pitched the ball up and caused havoc. Miles took a wicket with his first ball and another in the same over which wrapped up the Rustons innings, all out for 87 having looked very much in charge at 73-2.

Two cup wins in two matches … another win next week against Hykeham could put Nocton in the cup semi-final. Come along and watch if you can.
